What Clients Are Saying

“The strategies I learned in counseling—I still think about them to this day. I thought it was going to be just about dealing with that specific relationship, but it was actually about how to handle relationship issues in general. The role-playing and different perspectives helped me grow as a person, in relationships and at work.”

Does Couples Counseling
Really Work?

At Beautiful Journey Counseling, we use the Gottman Method. The Gottman Method doesn’t just repair problems — it helps partners build a foundation for a resilient, fulfilling future. Our therapists are trained in strategies that are observationally validated, culturally adaptable, and backed by rigorous clinical studies — helping couples rebuild trust, strengthen friendship, and rediscover joy together.

What the research shows:

  • Improves communication and conflict regulation
  • Strengthens intimacy, trust, and emotional connection
  • Supports couples through trauma, parenting stress, and infidelity
  • Results last over time — improvements maintained at follow-up
  • Couples therapy overall is ~70-75% effective when concerns are addressed early (APA)

How Long Does Couples Counseling Take?

How long counseling takes depends on the couple and the severity of relationship issues. Some couples only need minimal support in a collaborative, safe environment to get the ball rolling. Others require more intensive guidance and time to build a solid foundation—especially when trust has been compromised.

That said, couples counseling is generally considered short-term, lasting an average of 12 sessions. Nearly 88% of cases are resolved within 50 sessions, with 66% resolved within 20 sessions.

One factor that affects how long counseling takes—and is within your control—is equal investment. If both partners are not equally invested in the process or neglect to put in the effort, results take longer and won’t be as effective.

Do the benefits last?

Improvements attained during counseling tend to hold firm for up to 5 years after completing treatment. Many of the skills learned are retained permanently and allow you to address future problems more effectively. If needed, you can always return for a refresher—or even schedule ongoing sessions where your relationship is the number one priority.

Can Individual Counseling
Help Too?

Research shows that individual mental health and relationship health are interconnected. The problems you have as an individual will affect your relationships—and improving yourself strengthens your relationships.

Sometimes people have sensitive issues or past trauma they want to work through one-on-one. To avoid perceived bias, a counselor will often refer an individual to another professional while continuing to work with the couple cooperatively. Attending both individual and couples counseling can enhance your progress on both fronts.
